5 common Roadblocks to switching careers
There are numerous self-imposed roadblocks that people put up which can prevent them from switching careers. When I work with my career counseling clients, there seem to be five common ones which continually pop up. The first one pertains to low self-confidence. Many of my clients lack the self-esteem to take the leap from their current career to another due to not possessing the belief that they are strong enough, capable enough, and/or smart enough to do so. Exhaustion is another contributing factor as to why my clients refuse to make a career switch. They are so tired in their current job they feel as if they do not have the emotional, physical, and intellectual capacity to change careers. An additional blocker my clients internally put up refers to their age. Most of my post-50 clients erroneously think that it is too late to start a second chapter and refuse to do so based on this belief. Lack of education is an additional roadblock that I frequently hear in session. However, I have had clients transition into a new successful career with no further education required. The lie that you have to “jump headfirst” into a new career is the fifth most common roadblock that my clients implement. They lack the understanding that you can slowly transition and began your new career as a part-time side hustle until you are established enough to switch to full-time. Once I work with my clients on removing these blockers, they finally feel free to make the desired career switch!
